Founded in 1938, the Norfolk Botanical Garden is a horticultural nexus, containing more than 150 acres of different landscapes and rare flowers, which includes one of the largest displays of azaleas, camellias, roses and rhododendrons in the country. Boasting some 20 different themed areas, the garden displays an extensive range of flowering and leafy plants, trees and herbs. Some areas cover particular plant species, like the 3,000-plant Bicentennial Rose Garden, and other gardens feature periods of time such as the Renaissance Garden, inspired by the Italian gardens of the 16th century. Located beside Lake Whitehurst, which provides a naturally rich soil for plants, the gardens are set on the northeastern side of the city, beside the Norfolk International Airport.
